Robotics I
Inst: Alexi Badaoui
From multi-ton tracked tanks for firefighting and other hazardous duties, to robotic pack mules to quad-copters hoisting packages or video cameras, robots are being developed that will change human society in many ways. Robotics is a frontier requiring a multidisciplinary approach to solve the variety of problems for which it holds promise.

In Robotics I, students use VEX robotic components to study robot structures and electronic controls, design and build an intelligent robot, including digital hardware and software and metal and flexible structural components. Team roles include project coordination, mechanical skills and programming talent, combined and targeted to demonstrate a robot's ability to accomplish a number of tasks.

Robotics II
Inst: Bic Nguyen, Jonathan Allen
Boosting their understanding of robot structures and artificial intelligence by learning more advanced programming language, students work in groups to program a robot to succeed at more complex tasks.

The focus is on autonomous functions—the platform of choice is the LEGO MindStorm system, used to build a robot with an array of sensors, including gyro-sensors (solid state accelerometers), light and ultrasound sensors. Students learn to program their robots to accomplish a varied series of tasks in the MindStorm environment. Team roles all lean more towards programming the robot for a series of varied tasks which are progressively challenging.
